Under the single scorer it led, and that inversion did not survive three models. What survives is the price: this is the one gap on the page that clears the disagreement behind it, and RM600 is still the strongest argument here for anyone not chasing the new camera.

Scores include release recency since 27 September 2026. Each score is 0.9 × the panel's six-criterion median plus 0.1 × recency on a one-year phone cycle: 99 for both iPhone 18 models at 9 days, 49 for the iPhone 17 Pro at 373 days and 59 for the Mate 80 Pro at 303 days [18, 19, 20]. Weights quoted elsewhere on this page are the original six-criterion weights; each now counts at 0.9 of that figure.
Every score here is the median of three models — Claude Opus 5, Grok 4.6 and Gemini — scoring all fourteen smartphones in the catalog as one slate [17]. The sub-scores quoted in the entries below are not from that run. They are the earlier single-model figures, each cited to its own ledger row; the panel was combined per criterion to produce the overall, and where the two disagree the panel is the number in the table.
How much of this is reproducible, measured rather than assumed. Scoring the same unchanged records twice: one model moved five products by an average of 5.3 points. The three-model panel moved ten smartphones by 1.5 and six earbuds by 0.8[15]. So a panel position is worth roughly four to six times more than a single-model one — and a gap under about two points is still not a result.
The spread column is the part that does not reproduce. Across those same two runs it moved by an average of 5 points, and one phone went from a spread of 4 to a spread of 18 with its record untouched [16]. Read a spread as evidence that three models disagreed on the day, never as a stable property of the product, and never take a low spread as confirmation.
Positions 1 and 2 are 1.6 points apart on six criteria (1.4 with recency), against spreads of 6 and 9. That is not an order. The one gap that clears the disagreement behind it is the 2.8 between the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro — and it runs the opposite way to the single-model score this guide carried yesterday [14, 17].
Two of these four records were broken this morning and were fixed before this was written. The iPhone 18 Pro carried a leaked $1,099 price against Apple's announced $1,199 and only six specifications; the Mate 80 Pro carried no operating-system field at all, so its software criterion had been scored on nothing. Both were corrected and re-scored: the iPhone from 82.8 to 81.0, the Huawei from 79.5 to 71.2 [9].
Foldables are excluded and are ranked separately in the 4:3-format guide.
What we did not rank, and why
What we did not rank, and why
Every foldable. The iPhone Duo, Galaxy Z Fold8, Xiaomi 18 Fold, Oppo Find N6, Honor Magic V6, Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra are a different purchase at a different price, and they have their own guide.
Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, which is marked discontinued in the catalog and still carries a score from July that has not been re-run.
Every Android flagship that is not Huawei. The catalog holds no Galaxy S26, no Pixel 11 Pro, no Xiaomi 17 Ultra as a ranked slab. This page is three iPhones and one Huawei, and it cannot answer "what should I buy on Android".
What would change this
What would change this
Adding a Galaxy S26 Ultra and a Pixel 11 Pro. This is the biggest gap on the page and the reason the title overstates what is here.
Anyone using the 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max. Both went on sale on 18 September, and every number attached to them is still Apple's.
Re-scoring the three remaining stale Huawei records, so the whole category sits on one model and one day the way the smartwatches and earbuds categories now do.
The iPhone 17 Pro being discontinued or selling out, which removes the cheapest sensible option on this page and makes second place moot.

Original research summary
The iPhone 18 Pro Max, at RM5,999. Three models scoring all fourteen phones in the catalog put it first at 93.7 on six criteria, 1.6 ahead of the 18 Pro; with release recency, 10% of each score since 27 September 2026, it scores 94.2, 1.4 ahead [20]. It now carries the narrowest disagreement on the slate at 6 points [17]. That is the closest thing to a settled result on this page — and 1.6 is still not a separation.
The iPhone 17 Pro is no longer the value pick on merit — it is the cheap one. Under a single model it edged the 18 Pro 81.8 to 80.9, and that ordering did not survive: the panel puts the 18 Pro above it, 92.6 to 90.1[11]. grok argued in the challenge round that the inversion was never real; levelling the software evidence did not move it, and three models did.
So the RM600 is the whole case for the 17 Pro, and it is still a good one — 89.3 against 92.1 is 2.8 points against spreads of 7 and 9, which is the one gap on this page that clears its own noise. With recency the gap is 7.5 (92.8 against 85.3); the extra 4.7 is the 17 Pro's year of age, not measured quality [20].
The Huawei Mate 80 Pro is rankable again, and that is a story about our own record. Three models had refused to score its battery because the catalog held no battery or charging figure for it at all — nor for any of the four Huaweis, while the iPhone 18 Pro carried three. The single scorer had been filling that in regardless, at 89. With 5,750 mAh and 100W on the record, all three models scored it: 78.9 on that run, and 81.4 once its software and camera evidence was complete as well [12, 13, 17]; 79.2 with release recency [20].
The Huawei Mate 80 Pro is the value play and the software gamble. RM3,999 buys the biggest battery on this page, 88 on camera and 48 on software[4, 10, 12, 21] — no Google Play, no Google services, no published update commitment. That number is the whole decision.
How this was scored
The best flagship is the one that is still the phone you want in year three. Camera carries the most weight because it is what a flagship premium actually buys; software support carries real weight because it is what decides whether year three happens at all.
Performance — 18% · SoC speed and thermal behavior
Display — 16.2% · Brightness, color, refresh rate
Camera — 19.8% · Stills and video across focal lengths
Battery Life — 16.2% · Screen-on time and charging speed
Software Support — 10.8% · Update length and OS quality
Value — 9% · Performance per dollar at MSRP
Release recency — 10% · Scored by formula, not opinion: min(100, max(0, round(100 × (1 − age_days / 730.5)))), age from the date the guide shows to the 2026-09-27 check. Refresh cycle 1 year(s): one cycle old scores 50, two cycles 0; newer scores higher.

Raised by agy and adopted: for a Malaysian reader the sharp consequence of HarmonyOS having no Google Mobile Services is not a smaller app catalogue but Play Integrity enforcement. MAE, CIMB OCTO, Touch n Go eWallet and MyJPJ all enforce it, so the failure mode is banking and road-tax apps that do not run rather than apps that are merely missing

PANEL REPRODUCIBILITY MEASURED, and it is the answer to whether the panel is worth its cost. Scoring the same unchanged records twice: a SINGLE model moved five products by a mean of 5.34 points, max 7.1. The three-model panel moved ten smartphones by a mean of 1.52, max 3.1, and six earbuds by a mean of 0.83, max 2.4. The panel reproduces roughly four to six times better than one model, which is what justifies the extra calls

BUT THE SPREAD COLUMN DOES NOT REPRODUCE. Across the same two runs the widest-disagreement figure moved by a mean of 5.0 points on the smartphones (max 14: iPhone 18 Pro Max went 4 to 18) and 3.2 on the earbuds (max 6). So the OVERALL is reproducible to about a point and a half while the disagreement figure beside it is not. Totals with recency, recomputed from the unrounded pre-recency totals (0.9 × total + 0.1 × recency; an entry missing a criterion is renormalised over the weight actually scored), in order: 1 iPhone 18 Pro Max 93.680 → 94.212 (94.2); 2 iPhone 18 Pro 92.100 → 92.790 (92.8); 3 iPhone 17 Pro 89.320 → 85.288 (85.3); 4 Huawei Mate 80 Pro 81.440 → 79.196 (79.2). The earlier totals row blended the one-decimal published totals; every displayed score and position is unchanged. Entries whose totals round to the same one-decimal score share a rank. No stock-based tie-break.
