First by 0.2 once release recency is scored, as the newest of the top three [24]. It is the quietest pair here at 91 — and its microphone is no longer the reason to buy it. The QN3e processor and four microphones per bud are a genuine step up on the XM5, and 91 puts it a point ahead of the AirPods Pro 3 [8, 12]. But this guide previously called its microphone an outright win that "no amount of panel re-scoring has moved", on a single model's 90. Three models scoring the whole field give it 82 — fourth, behind the AirPods Pro 3 at 85 and both the Galaxy Buds4 Pro and AirPods 5 at 84 [8, 10]. If you take calls in noise, this page no longer points you here.

Weights quoted elsewhere on this page are the original six-criterion weights; each now counts at 0.9 of that figure.

And the sub-scores every one of those totals is built from [8], with the rubric weight beside each criterion and the leader in bold:

#EarbudsSound .27ANC .198Comfort .162Battery .108Mic .072Value .09Recency .10

5AirPods 572628062848199
6AirPods 4 with ANC73588052795850

No pair leads more than three of the six performance criteria, and neither of the top two dominates. The AirPods Pro 3 takes comfort, microphone and value; the Technics takes sound and battery; the Sony takes noise cancellation and nothing else [12]. The Sony's first place comes from recency on top of that one lead, over a rival that won the six criteria on breadth [24].

What fifth place means for AirPods 5, and what it does not

What fifth place means for AirPods 5, and what it does not

It is ranked, and two outside reviewers said it should not be. A usable median on all six criteria — though four of them from two panellists rather than three [11, 21] — and a widest spread of 18, narrower than the AirPods 4 with ANC ranked below it at 20 [8]. The deciding argument is consistency: three sibling guides on this site rank unshipped preorder Apple hardware at number one, from Apple's own figures [9]. Holding this one page to a stricter rule would not make the site more honest.

Against the AirPods 4 with ANC it replaces, it wins four criteria of six — noise cancellation 62 against 58, battery 62 against 52, microphone 84 against 79, value 81 against 58. Comfort ties at 80. It loses sound by a single point, 72 against 73 [8].

But more than half of that 4.5-point lead on the six criteria is a currency artifact; recency adds another 4.5 [24]. value is scored on USD MSRP, where AirPods 5 is 28% cheaper than the AirPods 4; in ringgit it is 7.7% cheaper, RM599 against RM649 [18]. That one criterion supplies 2.3 of the 4.5 points. Drop it and renormalise and the lead is 2.4 [18] — still clear of the 0.8 this panel moves on a re-run [5], and less than half the headline. On the open-ear side of this page it is still the one to buy.

Apple's headline claim is not contradicted, and it is not confirmed either. Apple says it removes up to 50% more noise than the AirPods 4 with ANC [1]; the panel scores it four points higher on that criterion, 62 against 58 [8] — and four points sits well inside its own 18-point spread [11].

The open-ear problem is structural, and it is most of why this sits fifth. anc at 0.22 and comfort at 0.18 are 40% of a rubric written for sealed buds, and AirPods 5 has no seal [11]. Its 62 on noise cancellation is 28 behind the AirPods Pro 3's 90 [8]. If you want quiet, nothing on this page says buy this. If you cannot tolerate a tip in your ear canal, this and the AirPods 4 are the only two options here — and this is plainly the better one.

How these scores were made, and how far to trust them

How these scores were made, and how far to trust them

Every score here is the median of three models — Claude Opus 5, Grok 4.6 and Gemini — scoring this whole category as one slate [8]. A criterion needs two of the three to count.

The order changed when the records were completed, and that matters more than the order. Four of these six records carried no microphone evidence at all and two carried no driver evidence. With the gaps closed the Sony fell from first to third and all four sealed pairs moved from medium to high confidence [7]. A ranking is a function of how completely its records are written.

How much of this reproduces, measured rather than assumed. Scoring the same unchanged records twice, one model moved five products by an average of 5.3 points; the three-model panel moved ten smartphones by 1.5 and six earbuds by 0.8 [5]. A panel position is worth roughly four to six times a single-model one — and a gap under about two points is still not a result.

The spread column is the part that does not reproduce. Across those two runs it moved by an average of 5 points, and one phone went from a spread of 4 to 18 with its record untouched [6]. Read a spread as evidence that three models disagreed on the day, never as a stable property of the product.

One sub-score still does not hold up, and it is value. It is computed on USD MSRP, which inverts in ringgit: the Technics scores above the Sony while costing RM400 more here [13]. The other defect two outside reviewers raised — Sony and Technics sharing an identical battery 78 — is resolved: the panel separates them 92 to 83 [14].

Two outside reviewers were asked to break this page, and neither passed it [19]. Both independently said the Sony should be second, for the currency reason above — conceded, and stated at the top. Both also said AirPods 5 should carry no number. That one is a disagreement, not a concession: three other guides on this site rank unshipped Apple hardware at number one on exactly this evidence, so the honest fix is a rule for the whole site rather than an exception on this page [9]. Both also reported the Galaxy Buds4 Pro's total as an arithmetic error; it is not, and the fault was ours — the brief they were sent rounded its sound score from 81.5 to 82 [20].

What we did not rank, and why

What we did not rank, and why

  • Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (Gen 2), about RM1,400 and arguably the Sony's closest rival. Bose does not exist as a brand in refer's catalog, and creating a brand is an editorial act that belongs in refer's admin, not in a guide that wants one more candidate.
  • Over-ear headphones. They live on a different rubric, where a 40-hour battery would demolish every pair here.
  • Open-ear buds other than Apple's. The field has grown and this catalog holds none of it — which leaves the open-ear half of this page a two-product comparison between two generations of the same product.
What would change this

What would change this

  • Anyone actually hearing AirPods 5, and the third panellist scoring the four criteria it declined [11]. Its 74.6, 71.9 before release recency, is the least-supported number on this page and the one most likely to move [24].
  • An open-ear rubric. Scoring an unsealed bud on anc and on seal-stability comfort measures the format, not the product, and it is most of why AirPods 5 sits fifth [11].
  • Scoring value in ringgit. It currently inverts for the reader this guide is written for [13].
  • Adding Bose to the catalog, which would change the top of this table or confirm it.
  • The top three separating. 1.0 point across three pairs with spreads of 6, 8 and 11 is not an ordering, and re-running this panel will not make it one [8].

Original research summary

The Sony WF-1000XM6 and the AirPods Pro 3 are level at the top: 84.6 and 84.4. On the three-model panel's six criteria the AirPods Pro 3 led at 85.5, with the narrowest disagreement on the page at 6 points [8]; release recency, 10% of each score since 27 September 2026, lifts the newer Sony (February 2026) past it by 0.2 [24]. The AirPods Pro 3 at RM859 is the cheapest of the top three and leads three of the six criteria — comfort, microphone and value [12]; the Sony leads noise cancellation.

Do not read the top three as an order. They span 2.4 points — 84.6, 84.4, 82.2 — against spreads of 11, 6 and 8 [24, 8]. Pick on price, fit and platform. On price that is the AirPods Pro 3 by RM340 over the Sony and RM740 over the Technics [16]; on platform, the Galaxy Buds4 Pro's 24-bit audio needs Samsung hardware [2] and the AirPods 5's headline features are Apple-only [17].

The value criterion still flatters the Technics. value is scored on USD MSRP, where the Technics is USD 30 cheaper than the Sony; in ringgit it is RM400 dearer [13]. On the six criteria, dropping value put the Sony above the Technics — 85.67 against 85.42 [18] — and two outside reviewers said swap them [19]; with release recency the Sony is ahead regardless [24]. The scores are left as refer's standing rubric produced them, because re-weighting inside one guide makes these six incomparable with every other product on the site.

AirPods 5 is ranked fifth at 74.6, and was released on 18 September [24, 23]. It is RM50 cheaper than the AirPods 4 with ANC it replaces and 4.5 points better on six criteria, 9.0 with recency — and it is the only pair here nobody has heard, including the models that scored it. Its entry says what that is worth and what it is not.

All six pairs are buyable in Malaysia with local warranty [16]. That is unusual for this catalog — the keyboards guide on this site could not name a single board buyable here.

How this was scored

The best wireless earbuds are the ones that sound right and stay quiet on a commute, judged on what they do in the ear rather than on feature lists. Sound carries the most weight because it is the thing being bought; noise isolation comes next because it is what separates a good pair from a pair you actually reach for on a plane.

  • Sound Quality — 27% · Frequency response and distortion
  • Noise Isolation — 19.8% · Active and passive attenuation
  • Fit & Comfort — 16.2% · Seal stability and long-wear comfort
  • Battery Life — 10.8% · Runtime per charge and in case
  • Microphone — 7.2% · Call clarity in noise
  • Value — 9% · Performance per dollar at MSRP
  • Release recency — 10% · Scored by formula, not opinion: min(100, max(0, round(100 × (1 − age_days / 1461)))), age from the date the guide shows to the 2026-09-27 check. Refresh cycle 2 year(s): one cycle old scores 50, two cycles 0; newer scores higher.

A preorder status was ADDED to refer's availability vocabulary: 'Announced for sale here with a date and a price, orderable from the authorised channel but not shipping yet.' It sits directly after official in STATUS_ORDER, ahead of marketplace, because it is the authorised channel with local warranty and the only thing it lacks is stock today. It must name a channel and must carry a price - a preorder without a local price is unknown, not a finding - and unlike official it is NOT flagged when in_stock is false, because a preordered product not being in stock is the normal case. Six tests cover it; refer's full suite passes at 541. apple-airpods-5 migrated from the hand-written official to preorder at RM599

PANEL REPRODUCIBILITY MEASURED, and it is the answer to whether the panel is worth its cost. Scoring the same unchanged records twice: a SINGLE model moved five products by a mean of 5.34 points, max 7.1. The three-model panel moved ten smartphones by a mean of 1.52, max 3.1, and six earbuds by a mean of 0.83, max 2.4. BUT THE SPREAD COLUMN DOES NOT REPRODUCE. Across the same two runs the widest-disagreement figure moved by a mean of 5.0 points on the smartphones (max 14: iPhone 18 Pro Max went 4 to 18) and 3.2 on the earbuds (max 6). So the OVERALL is reproducible to about a point and a half while the disagreement figure beside it is not. AirPods 5 IS NOW RANKED, fifth at 71.9, reversing the decision to leave it out. Three reasons, none of them new evidence about the product: it carries a complete 6/6 panel score; its widest spread of 18 is NARROWER than the ranked AirPods 4 with ANC's 20, so the exclusion test was not spread, coverage or confidence; and the three sibling guides published from this workspace in the same commit all rank unshipped preorder Apple hardware at number one - iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and iPhone Duo - from Apple's own figures with a one-line disclosure. Excluding AirPods 5 for being unshipped applied a standard to one guide that the other three do not apply

(1) 'AirPods Pro 3, the quietest pair here, 92 on noise cancellation, beats the Sony by six' - the panel gives Sony 91 against AirPods Pro 3's 90, so the Sony leads. (2) 'Sony, the best microphone here, by a clear margin, and no amount of panel re-scoring has moved it' - the panel gives AirPods Pro 3 85, Galaxy Buds4 Pro 84, AirPods 5 84, Sony 82, so the Sony is fourth and re-scoring moved it precisely. (3) 'Technics sound 92, level with the Sony' - the panel gives Technics 90 against Sony 86. Five further stale sub-scores: AirPods Pro 3 battery 65 not 82, Galaxy comfort 65 not 82 and value 48 not 75, AirPods 4 anc 57 not 58 and battery 36 not 52. validate passed throughout, because it reads shape

THE value INVERSION SURVIVES THE PANEL. Technics EAH-AZ100 scores 80 against the Sony WF-1000XM6's 74 because value is computed on USD MSRP - USD 299.99 against USD 329.99 - while in ringgit the Technics is RM1,599 against the Sony's RM1,199, RM400 MORE. A Malaysian reader following the value score still overpays. The Galaxy Buds4 Pro's 75 against the AirPods Pro 3's 84 at the same roughly USD 250 is the same criterion disagreeing with itself

THE ORDER OF 2 AND 3 IS SET BY THE value CRITERION THE GUIDE DISOWNS. Dropping value and renormalising over the other five criteria: AirPods Pro 3 85.69, Sony WF-1000XM6 85.67, Technics EAH-AZ100 85.42, Galaxy Buds4 Pro 80.92, AirPods 5 70.89, AirPods 4 with ANC 68.47. So the Sony goes SECOND without it, by 0.24 over the Technics, and the AirPods Pro 3 keeps first by 0.02 - which is nothing. Separately, value supplies 2.3 of the 4.5 points between AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 with ANC, 51% of that gap; ex-value the gap is 2.42. The USD basis makes AirPods 5 28% cheaper than the AirPods 4 while the ringgit basis makes it 7.7% cheaper

Agreed independently: swap 2 and 3 because value is a USD index on a ringgit page, and take AirPods 5 out of the numbered ranking. agy additionally proposed anc 0.22 to 0.26 and battery 0.12 to 0.08, and platform lock-in as a scored gate. The value finding is CONCEDED and now stated on the page with the arithmetic [18]. The re-weighting and the platform gate are REJECTED for the third round running: re-weighting inside one topic makes these six incomparable with every other product scored on refer's standing earbuds rubric, and platform lock-in is a hard filter for a buyer rather than a quality difference. Keeping AirPods 5 ranked is a DISAGREEMENT with both reviewers, not a concession, and the reason is in [9]

BUG IN challenge's BRIEF BUILDER: it rounds sub-scores to integers, so any product with a fractional sub-score produces an overall the reviewers cannot reproduce. The Galaxy Buds4 Pro's sound is 81.5 and the brief printed 82; both grok and agy independently recomputed 80.48 and reported the published 80.3 as an arithmetic error. Totals with recency, recomputed from the unrounded pre-recency totals (0.9 × total + 0.1 × recency; an entry missing a criterion is renormalised over the weight actually scored), in order: 1 Sony WF-1000XM6 84.500 → 84.550 (84.6); 2 AirPods Pro 3 85.520 → 84.368 (84.4); 3 Technics EAH-AZ100 84.880 → 82.192 (82.2); 4 Galaxy Buds4 Pro 80.330 → 80.897 (80.9); 5 AirPods 5 71.900 → 74.610 (74.6); 6 AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation 67.420 → 65.678 (65.7). The earlier totals row blended the one-decimal published totals; every displayed score and position is unchanged. Entries whose totals round to the same one-decimal score share a rank. No stock-based tie-break.
