Buying notes & calculation details

Two of three, which is unusually good for this catalog. The keyboards guide on this site could not name a single board buyable here.

A note on how "available" is counted. A product with a confirmed Malaysian launch date and a published Malaysian price is treated here as available, not unavailable — availability is about whether it will be sold here, not whether it can be bought this minute [31]. refer's own availability vocabulary cannot yet express that: it allows only official, marketplace, import, unavailable and unknown, and defines unavailable as "cannot be bought here at all, by any route" [30]. So refer gained a preorder status, and the Duo's record now uses it: RM9,499, the authorised channel named, the 16 October pre-order and 23 October on-sale dates in its note, and no stock flag — because it is not sold out, it has not gone on sale [45, 53]. A preorder must carry a local price; without one it is unknown, which is what a rumour deserves.

The ranking

The ranking

This is a field of three, and that is the finding. Inner-display aspect ratio across every large foldable on sale in 2026 is bimodal, with nothing between 1.110 and 1.325 [7]. Only three phones sit on the tall side of that gap. The four square-format foldables are scored and in the catalog; they are a different purchase and are listed at the end.

Scores include release recency since 27 September 2026. Each score is 0.9 × the panel's six-criterion median plus 0.1 × recency: 100 for the unreleased iPhone Duo, 97 for the Xiaomi at 20 days and 91 for the Fold8 at 67 days, on a one-year phone cycle. All three are new, so recency barely moves them [54, 55, 56]. Weights quoted elsewhere on this page are the original six-criterion weights; each now counts at 0.9 of that figure.

Every score here is the median of three models — Claude Opus 5, Grok 4.6 and Gemini — scoring all fourteen phones in the catalog as one slate [46]. Read the spread. On the panel's six criteria the Duo leads the Xiaomi by 0.7 against a Xiaomi spread of 13, and the Samsung by 3.5 against spreads of 7 and 10; with recency the gaps are 0.9 and 4.0 [56]. None of the three is separated from another [47, 48].

How much of this is reproducible, measured rather than assumed. Scoring the same unchanged records twice: one model moved five products by an average of 5.3 points. The three-model panel moved ten smartphones by 1.5 and six earbuds by 0.8 [50]. So a panel position is worth roughly four to six times more than a single-model one — and a gap under about two points is still not a result.

The spread column is the part that does not reproduce. Across those same two runs it moved by an average of 5 points, and one phone went from a spread of 4 to a spread of 18 with its record untouched [51]. Read a spread as evidence that three models disagreed on the day, never as a stable property of the product, and never take a low spread as confirmation.

What that does buy is a different kind of confidence: this order has now held four times — one single-model run and two panels, across four scorers — while never once being a measurement. And the panel's own spread is not stable either: the iPhone 18 Pro Max moved from spread 4 to spread 18 between two runs with its record untouched [49].

This table changed three times, and the last change was caused by a defect in our own record. The Xiaomi was the only one of the three whose catalog entry carried no update-length field, while the other two carried software_support_years [34]. software measures update length and OS quality, so the scorer was judging a criterion on which two phones had evidence and the third had none — it declined outright three times, then once returned 72 [33]. With Xiaomi's published policy added to the record — four OS updates and six years of patches, against seven from Samsung and Google — the same scorer returned 42 [35, 36], and the rationale names exactly that reason.

So the 72 was the artefact, not the estimate. This guide had placed the criterion by hand at 50 with a range of 45-58; the evidence-backed figure is 42 [37]. All three entries are now scored on all six criteria, from records carrying the same kinds of evidence.

Second and third are no longer tied, and that is the panel's doing. Under the single scorer they were 74.0 against 73.9 — 0.1 points, no gap at all, on a product that had moved 7.9 points across seven scoring runs [39]. Three models scoring the slate together put them 2.8 apart [46]. With recency the gap is 3.1 [56]. That is still inside the Xiaomi's own 13-point spread, so read it as an ordering rather than a measurement.

A two-model panel confirms this order. Scored again as a whole slate by claude-opus-5 and grok-4.6, independently and without sight of each other's answers: iPhone Duo 87.7, Xiaomi 18 Fold 83.9, Galaxy Z Fold8 83.4 — the same podium, in the same order, at high confidence, with the two models disagreeing by at most 3 points on the top two and 8 on the Samsung [42, 43]. That matters more than the numbers: re-scoring five unrelated products on a different model moved them by 5.3 points on average [42], so an order surviving a change of scorer is not something to assume.

Those two-model figures are not the ones in the table above — the table is the later three-model run [46]. Both sit about 10 points above the single scorer [44], which is why the whole smartphone catalog was re-scored on the panel together rather than three phones at a time: a panel score and a single-model score are not on one scale, and mixing them is the exact incomparability two rounds of re-scoring went to remove.

What survived the challenge unchanged: camera at 0.22 is heavy for a field where two of three phones are dual-lens, and nothing here scores pocketability. Both are limits of the standing rubric, not of the order. See CHALLENGE.md.

Under the single scorer only the Galaxy Z Fold8 was high-confidence on all six criteria [9]. The panel lifted all three to high [46] — which reflects three models agreeing, not new evidence arriving, and the Xiaomi's 13-point spread is the reminder that agreement and certainty are different things.

Read the headline scores and the sub-scores as two different measurements. The number beside each phone is the three-model panel median [46]. Every sub-score quoted in the entries below — performance, camera, software — is the earlier single-model run, cited to its own ledger row, because the panel was combined per criterion for the overall and those per-criterion medians are not what the entries were written against. Where the two disagree, the panel is the one in the table.

Why "4:3" is the whole guide

Why "4:3" is the whole guide

"4:3" here is a colloquial label, not arithmetic. True 4:3 is 1.333, and only the Galaxy Z Fold8 at 1.325 is literally that — Samsung's own spec sheet says "4:3 ratio" [6]. The iPhone Duo at 1.422 and the Xiaomi at 1.414 are √2:1, the ISO 216 A4 paper ratio [13]. The family spans 1.325 to 1.422 and is page-shaped; the four phones below it are square-shaped. That gap is the whole distinction.

A book-style foldable is not one product category. Measured from published pixel counts, the 2026 field splits cleanly in two [7]:

phoneinner ratiocover ratiofolded width
iPhone Duo1.4221.45584.1 mm
Xiaomi 18 Fold1.4141.46683.6 mm
Galaxy Z Fold81.3251.58081.9 mm
*— empty band —*
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra1.1102.33372.8 mm
Oppo Find N61.1032.295~73 mm
Honor Magic V61.0832.24174.5 mm
Pixel 11 Pro Fold1.0372.16976 mm

A 4:3 foldable unfolds to a page and folds to a passport. At 82-84 mm across it is too wide to work as an ordinary phone shut, so you open it far more often. A square-format foldable unfolds to a near-square canvas and folds to a normal 73-76 mm candy bar you can use one-handed all day without ever opening it.

Xiaomi built its panel to 1.4139, which is the square root of two to four significant figures — the A4 paper ratio [13]. Its folded footprint is 83.6 x 117.8 mm against the iPhone Duo's 84.1 x 117.8 mm [8, 13]. The same object, half a millimetre apart.

What we did not rank, and why

What we did not rank, and why

Four square-format foldables, all scored and all in the catalog. They are excluded on measured aspect ratio, not on quality — two of them outscore everything on this page on the six shared criteria [58]:

  • Honor Magic V6, 90.5 — inner 1.083. The highest score in the whole foldable field [58].
  • Oppo Find N6, 89.8 — inner 1.103, the only square-format foldable with an official Malaysian launch at RM8,699 [58]. Its record was missing the same update-length field the Xiaomi's was; adding it RAISED the score, because Oppo commits to five OS updates and ships Google services [40].
  • Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, 85.2 — inner 1.110. Samsung's flagship foldable, and the sibling most people assume is the Duo's rival. It is not: it folds to a 72.8 mm candy bar [4, 7, 58].
  • Pixel 11 Pro Fold, 84.4 — inner 1.037, the squarest phone on sale [5, 58].

Flip-style foldables and tri-folds. A clamshell folds a normal phone in half and a tri-fold is a third format again. Neither belongs on this scale.

Huawei's foldables, which are square-format and, in the Mate X6's case, from November 2024.

What would change this

What would change this

  • A global Xiaomi 18 Fold with Google services, which would make the phone at the top of this page one a Malaysian reader could actually buy. That, not the score, is what this page is waiting on.
  • A second model scoring the Xiaomi. Seven runs on this one product gave a 7.9-point spread, three declines of software and two different answers for it [39]. Second and third place are 3.1 points apart with recency, which is inside that noise [56].
  • Anyone actually using the iPhone Duo. It is first on figures Apple published about a phone that ships on 23 October. Hinge feel, crease visibility and how 254 g sits in a pocket are all unmeasured.
  • A software score for the Xiaomi that a second model will stand behind. Two runs declined it. Software is 10.8 percent of the rubric.
  • A pocketability criterion. Both outside reviewers raised this independently and neither was prompted to: the rubric's stated purpose is that a foldable "compromised as the thing in your pocket" has solved the wrong problem, and then nothing scores folded width, thickness or mass. It is the axis the Galaxy Z Fold8 wins outright at 201 g and 9.7 mm and the iPhone Duo loses at 254 g and 11.3 mm [8, 19]. Adding it would most likely move the Samsung up.
  • Re-weighting camera down and software up. grok proposed camera 0.22 → 0.14 and software 0.12 → 0.20, and on the corrected sub-scores it gives iPhone Duo 77.7, Galaxy Z Fold8 76.1, Xiaomi 18 Fold 71.3 [38] — the same podium grok predicted before any of this was measured. It is not applied here because re-weighting inside one topic makes these three incomparable with the six phones already scored on the standing rubric, but it is the strongest argument yet for a foldables rubric that does.
  • A foldables product type in refer with its own rubric. These three are scored on the slab-phone rubric, which gives no credit for unfolding and no penalty for a crease, and weights value at 0.10 — too little to carry a 34% price gap [32].
  • The Xiaomi's catalog price being corrected from USD 1,937 to USD 1,540. The stored record is wrong and its value sub-score is measured against a price about USD 400 too high [20, 21].
  • A fourth 4:3 entrant. The format is two years old and has three members. Honor, Oppo and Google have all stayed square.
  • The iPhone Duo's availability record after 23 October, which will need re-running once it is actually on sale [53].

Original research summary

The iPhone Duo. It leads by 0.9 points, against a Xiaomi panel spread of 13 [56, 52], and it is the only one of the three that is both the top score and a phone you can own here. Behind it the Xiaomi 18 Fold leads the Galaxy Z Fold8 by 3.1 points [56] — inside the Xiaomi's own 13-point spread, so not a separation either — and they are separated by everything else: the Samsung is RM7,099 today with a local warranty, the Xiaomi is a China-only import with no published Malaysian price and no Google Play [18, 26, 28].

What that costs you is RM2,400. The Duo is RM9,499 and lands 23 October; the Galaxy Z Fold8 is RM7,099 today, from Samsung Malaysia with local warranty [26, 27]. In US dollars the Duo is 5.3% dearer than the Samsung. In ringgit it is 33.8% dearer [29]. If the format matters to you more than the badge, the Samsung is the one to buy.

If you are on iPhone, none of the above is a comparison. The Duo is the only foldable that runs iOS, and the other two are not alternatives at any price.

How this was scored

The best large book-style foldable is the one that is still a good phone when it is shut. A device that folds open into an 8-inch canvas but is compromised as the thing in your pocket for 90% of the day has solved the wrong problem. So it is judged as a phone first — chip, screens, cameras, endurance, how long it will keep getting updates — and the fold is treated as what it has to earn its price premium with, not as a category that excuses weaker fundamentals.

A preorder status was ADDED to refer's availability vocabulary: 'Announced for sale here with a date and a price, orderable from the authorised channel but not shipping yet.' It sits directly after official in STATUS_ORDER, ahead of marketplace, because it is the authorised channel with local warranty and the only thing it lacks is stock today. It must name a channel and must carry a price - a preorder without a local price is unknown, not a finding - and unlike official it is NOT flagged when in_stock is false, because a preordered product not being in stock is the normal case. Six tests cover it; refer's full suite passes at 541. apple-iphone-duo migrated from the hand-written official to preorder at RM9,499

PANEL RE-RUN AFTER THE BATTERY FIX: iPhone Duo 85.8 (spread 10, high), Xiaomi 18 Fold 83.3 (spread 10, high), Galaxy Z Fold8 81.8 (spread 8, high). The 4:3 order holds for a THIRD time, now across two panel runs and one single-model run, and the Duo's lead over the Xiaomi widens from 0.4 to 2.5 - still inside a spread of 10

THE PANEL'S OWN SPREAD IS NOISY BETWEEN RUNS. iPhone 18 Pro Max went from spread 4 and high confidence to spread 18 and medium across two panel runs, with its record UNCHANGED - only the four Huawei records were edited between them. iPhone 18 Pro moved 8 to 18 the same way. The driver is value: claude 79, grok 73, gemini 91 on the Pro Max. So the spread column measures disagreement on the day, not a stable property of the product, and a low spread is weaker evidence than it looks. The overalls themselves were stable - 13 of 14 moved by less than 4 points

PANEL REPRODUCIBILITY MEASURED, and it is the answer to whether the panel is worth its cost. Scoring the same unchanged records twice: a SINGLE model moved five products by a mean of 5.34 points, max 7.1. The three-model panel moved ten smartphones by a mean of 1.52, max 3.1, and six earbuds by a mean of 0.83, max 2.4. The panel reproduces roughly four to six times better than one model, which is what justifies the extra calls

BUT THE SPREAD COLUMN DOES NOT REPRODUCE. Across the same two runs the widest-disagreement figure moved by a mean of 5.0 points on the smartphones (max 14: iPhone 18 Pro Max went 4 to 18) and 3.2 on the earbuds (max 6). So the OVERALL is reproducible to about a point and a half while the disagreement figure beside it is not. Read a spread as evidence that models disagreed on the day, never as a stable property of the product - and never treat a low spread as confirmation

iPhone Duo's Malaysian record now carries preorder, not the interim official chosen before that status existed. Status preorder, RM9,499, Apple Malaysia named as the authorised channel, in_stock null, with the 16 October pre-order and 23 October on-sale dates in the note. The earlier reasoning - that official was the honest fit because refer had no word for a confirmed-but-not-shipping launch - was true when written and is superseded by the vocabulary change

Totals with recency, recomputed from the unrounded pre-recency totals (0.9 × total + 0.1 × recency; an entry missing a criterion is renormalised over the weight actually scored), in order: 1 iPhone Duo 86.480 → 87.832 (87.8); 2 Xiaomi 18 Fold 85.780 → 86.902 (86.9); 3 Galaxy Z Fold8 83.040 → 83.836 (83.8). The earlier totals row blended the one-decimal published totals; every displayed score and position is unchanged. Entries whose totals round to the same one-decimal score share a rank. Square-format foldables in refer's catalog on 27 Sep 2026, panel overall scores on the standing six-criterion rubric (no recency): Honor Magic V6 90.5; Oppo Find N6 89.8; Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra 85.2; Pixel 11 Pro Fold 84.4. The Honor, not the Oppo, is the highest-scoring foldable in the catalog. These supersede the single-model figures in [3] and [41] for the guide's list of excluded phones; those rows remain the record of the earlier runs.
