Buying notes & calculation details

These provisional editorial ratings use Apple-silicon Mac performance/platform fit; PC and travel advice below explain when that order should change the choice. A close score or family-based grade is not proof of exact-capacity superiority. [119, 79]

Capacity worked example: 1 TB, 2 TB or 4 TB

Worked example: 88 GiB start, 20% reserve, retained net growth rather than gross writes. [2, 3, 76]

Time to the reserve boundary

Net growth1 TB2 TB4 TBBefore buying
5 GiB/day [10]131 days [76]280 days [10]578 days [10]

At 5 GiB/day retained growth, 1 TB lasts about 131 days versus 578 days for 4 TB. [76, 10]

10 GiB/day [10]66 days [76]140 days [10]289 days [10]

At 10 GiB/day retained growth, 1 TB lasts about 66 days. [76]

16 GiB/day [10]41 days [76]88 days [10]181 days [10]

At 16 GiB/day retained growth, 1 TB lasts about 41 days; even 4 TB about 181 days. [76, 10]

Buying notes & calculation details

Start with 88 GiB and keep 20% free; these are retained net-growth scenarios, not a forecast from one 16 GiB write day. A 1 TB purchase can be sensible with modest retention, but high retained growth quickly makes it too small. [2, 3, 9, 76]

The separately listed T7 Shield 1 TB black offer is RM773 with stock claimed; its RM545 reference is sold out. The 2 TB black RM959 and beige RM1029 quotes are different colours; the earlier beige RM1169.10 voucher remains history. Buying evidence and retained larger-capacity offers

Buying evidence and retained larger-capacity offers

The first comparison’s seven main entries remain in the ranked field, and both 2 TB capacity alternatives are now main rows. The original EX400U 4 TB RM6905 import asking price stays in history; the active exact Castle reference is RM2908, sold out. It is not evidence that every seller now offers that price or that a sold-out bargain can be purchased. [118, 93]

E82’s same-seller references remain RM1599 for 2 TB and RM2519 for 4 TB, an RM920 upgrade, or RM799.50 versus RM629.75/TB. The retained premium 4 TB DIY subtotal is RM3630.66; the SN850X 2 TB subtotal is RM1502.99. Both require a confirmed available enclosure and separate support contracts. The T7 Shield 4 TB RM3150 preorder and T9 2 TB RM1349.10 voucher are retained, with their original conditions. [14, 15, 18, 21, 22, 23]

For 1 TB, the lower reference tier starts at RM419 SL600 or RM545 T7 Shield, both sold out; mid-price listed references include RM809 SE920 and RM899 XS2000, and the T7 Shield RM773 alternate. Premium 1 TB complete-function parts references are RM1822.99 for 1M2/SN850X and RM1892.99 for 1M2/990 Pro, with a sold-out enclosure. Tiers describe these dated references rather than fixed budgets or an assertion of official local coverage. [82, 84, 97, 81, 83, 87, 86]

The demanding always-on Mac case

The demanding always-on Mac case

One demanding use case is a permanently attached research workspace on an M6 Mac mini with 32 GB memory and macOS 27. The supplied internal disk is 228 GiB and nearly full, so the external volume becomes the workspace’s sole local home. It contains about 116,000 files, including 0.2–0.3 GiB pickled models/CSVs, with long writes and heavy backtest reads; quiet days can have almost no writes. Those observations motivate reliability and mixed IO checks without turning this entire category guide into one person’s purchase. [1, 2, 3, 4, 57]

Keep the whole clone-dependent workspace on one APFS volume. Use encrypted APFS if the privacy requirement justifies it, but establish unlock after connection/reboot and delay unattended jobs until the intended volume is mounted; a directory with the same path on the internal disk is not the intended external workspace. Verify direct-port cable and power, repeat sleep/wake and reboot recovery, and make an independent backup with a tested restore before changing the working location. These are proposed acceptance checks, not tests already performed on the buyer’s machine. [5, 7, 8, 35, 37]

The rear port caps the link at 40 Gb/s; front USB is 10 Gb/s. An 80 Gb/s product cannot create extra host link bandwidth, but newer hardware can still perform differently at 40 Gb/s, so compare the actual 40 Gb/s result and full cost. Gen 2x2 drives fall to 10 Gb/s on this Mac. No link ceiling equals file-transfer throughput, especially for many small files. [6, 44]

What the performance evidence establishes

What the performance evidence establishes

The 990 Pro build has near-target APFS/M4 pairing evidence, but its reference quote is incomplete and neither post-cache M6 behaviour nor reboot recovery is certified. E82 requires continuous USB4 power, and its reviewed 2 TB Windows sample loses much of its initial write speed after cache exhaustion. T7 Shield's strong reviewed 4 TB large-file result is on Windows, while its quoted 2 TB alternative is sold out. T9 only receives its full link class on a native Gen 2x2 PC. EX400U's long-run test is for 2 TB on Windows; the separate 4 TB review adds Mac compatibility and small-file results, with a material heat concern. [18, 22, 26, 27, 30, 32, 34, 35, 37, 63, 64]

990 Pro 4 TB, internal PCIePost-cache TLC above roughly 1.6 GB/s [29]External enclosure performance [29]

For small-file work, the relevant gap is a matched low-queue-depth random/mixed-file test on the actual APFS path. The new EX400U Q1T1 result is on Windows; E82's relative random-IO behaviour and T7 Shield's Q32T1 result also do not measure the supplied workspace. The long-run graphs combine cache behaviour and thermals; a speed decline is not automatically thermal throttling unless the cause is isolated. [4, 26, 30, 34, 37, 63]

TLC is documented for 990 Pro, the tested SN850X revision and X9 Pro; the EX400U review attributes TLC to Corsair. The internal revisions have DRAM where documented; E82's NAND/DRAM/TBW remain undisclosed in its checked specification. DRAM or a hoped-for HMB path does not substitute for the exact workload result; HMB passthrough on these Mac bridges was not verified. [20, 25, 29, 33, 36, 40, 64]

macOS, power and support

macOS, power and support

TRIM is path-dependent, rather than a universal USB-versus-Thunderbolt rule. Oakley’s own Express 1M2/ASM2464PD Apple-silicon USB4 experiment supported TRIM and SMART; the Intel USB 3 fallback also supported TRIM, but not SMART. This is primary experimental evidence for that path, not certification of the present M6/macOS 27 build. Check actual negotiated transport and reporting after assembly instead of assuming support from a connector label. [36]

An enclosure name or controller supplier is also not a failure rate. The conflicting owner reports about ASM2464PD and OWC are signals to check firmware, cable, port power and mount recovery; their denominators, workloads and revisions do not support a population comparison with Intel. E82’s manufacturer expressly requires 15 W continuously for USB4, with 7.5 W for USB 3, and warns about idle/sleep power reduction. This condition remains visible in the buying advice. [35, 37]

The 990 Pro and SN850X warranty clocks belong to the bare SSDs; the DIY 1M2 enclosure has a separate shorter contract. OWC’s own preconfigured drive warranty is different. Samsung’s assembly/third-party exclusions concern damage caused by those factors; the checked text does not support a blanket “every enclosure voids warranty” claim. Replacement coverage does not include recovery of a sole copy of data, so neither TBW nor warranty replaces independent backup. [8, 20, 29, 38, 39]

At a hypothetical constant 16 GiB of host writes every day, five years totals about 31.37 decimal TB: around 2.61% of 1200 TBW and 1.31% of 2400 TBW. Quiet days make the observed average unknown. The small share of the rated host-write budget does not predict NAND wear, power-loss safety or a long service life; warranty time/exclusions can bind first. [3, 13]

Capacity arithmetic and sensitivity

Capacity arithmetic and sensitivity

The planning case starts with 88 GiB: 66 GiB of workspace plus 22 GiB of logs. With an editorial 20% free-space reserve, the table estimates time to that reserve boundary at constant retained net growth. Gross writes, clone/snapshot allocation and data retained are different quantities; an observed 16 GiB write day does not establish daily net growth. [2, 3, 9, 10]

For a three-year retention goal, the corresponding average growth ceilings are about 1.28 GiB/day on 2 TB and 2.64 GiB/day on 4 TB; for five years, about 0.77 and 1.58 GiB/day. If average net growth is far below the lower threshold, 2 TB can be sensible. Choose 4 TB when the larger retention window is useful and its complete supported quote is worth the cost. If 16 GiB/day is sustained net growth, neither is a multi-year answer without deleting/archiving or increasing capacity. [12, 56]

Nominal 2 TB and 4 TB convert to 1862.645 and 3725.290 GiB. With the chosen reserve and 88 GiB starting case, growth headroom is 1402.116 and 2892.232 GiB. Planning formula: (0.8 × nominal capacity in GiB − starting GiB) / retained GiB per day. Formatting, metadata, snapshots and clone allocation can change physical free space. [9, 10]

Start / reserve2 TB at 5 / 10 / 16 GiB/day4 TB at 5 / 10 / 16 GiB/day

5 years [12]0.77 GiB/day [12]1.58 GiB/day [12]

These are rounded constant-growth models, not forecasts or exact safe growth limits. Measure retained physical allocation over representative busy and quiet periods before assuming the observed peak writes recur as retained data. [3, 9, 12]

The new 1 TB headroom is 657.058 GiB under the same reserve/start assumptions. One-year retained-growth ceiling is about 1.80 GiB/day, three-year 0.60 and five-year 0.36; this supplements rather than replaces the larger-capacity tables. At constant 16 GiB/day host writes for five years, 31.37 TB is about 5.23% of a 600 TBW 1 TB NVMe contract; that is a write-budget comparison, not a life guarantee. [76, 13, 74]

How the ranking was assessed

How the ranking was assessed

The scores are author-owned editorial merit estimates for Apple-silicon Mac use, assisted by saved Claude Sonnet 5.5 diagnostic calls, under EXTERNAL-SSD-6.0. All eight original weights contribute. Ten diagnostic calls omitted criteria, so none of the model overall totals is adopted. The 1 TB order is provisional: grade changes within the plausible family-evidence limits can change its leader. No controlled uptime, failure probability or laboratory certification is implied. [119, 78]

RM value13%Complete reference cost within capacity [119]
Physical design8%Protection, portability and replaceability [119]
Release recency10%Documented age under a declared cadence [119]

Release recency uses min(100,max(0,round(100 × (1 − age_days/(2 × 1120))))). Samsung’s shipped T5/T7/T9 intervals are 1008 and 1232 days, with median 1120: a single-brand proxy rather than a measured industry median. E82 is on sale by March 16, 2025, not a proven exact first-global-sale date; the resulting grade is an optimistic bound if it shipped earlier. After the challenge, all DIY recency uses the oldest component’s documented date for conservative parts age; December 7, 2023 remains the separate build-possible-by enclosure bound. This uniform modelling choice keeps a new enclosure from refreshing an older blade, and changes the previous diagnostic order. [99, 100, 120, 125, 114, 121]

Value is 100 times the lowest ranked exact reference RM/TB in the capacity group divided by the candidate’s RM/TB, capped at 100. It includes dated sold-out prices without awarding or deducting stock points; shipping and unit-specific official Malaysian RMA remain unconfirmed. The T7 Shield 2 TB main row now uses black RM959, with beige RM1029 and older voucher evidence preserved separately. Small score differences reflect editorial assumptions rather than statistically measured superiority. [119, 90, 98, 143]

Every score source row contains the complete criterion reasons, original weights and unrounded total. Subjective grades can be challenged independently of the objective price, age and arithmetic. Capacity ranks use unrounded totals; the first group is 1 TB and the later groups are not a single cross-capacity purchase order. [119, 118]

Sensitivity, uncertainty and model corrections

Sensitivity, uncertainty and model corrections

Changing the cadence to either observed interval changes only the recency contribution; substituting the separately listed RM773 T7 Shield 1 TB offer changes its value contribution rather than its stock grade. The source below records the complete recalculated totals and ordering. SL600 now uses the same sustained baseline 50 as other prebuilt drives without an exact-capacity long-cache test; hypothetical grades 65 and 40 test the optimistic and conservative alternatives, not measured results. A hypothetical RM545 Lexar price recomputes every 1 TB value grade and exposes the relative-price anchor. The 1 TB order therefore remains provisional, while the buy-today shortlist is explicit above it. [143, 125, 97]

Lexar 1 TB relies on explicit 2 TB family performance. SE920 1 TB has native exact tests but no exact post-cache Mac test. Every 1 TB DIY assessment distinguishes native NVMe and other-capacity enclosure evidence from a tested full pair. T9 1/2 TB and X9 Pro 2 TB now have exact-capacity empirical evidence, correcting the diagnostic input gaps. None resolves repeated M6/macOS 27 mount/boot/encrypted-volume acceptance. [69, 68, 74, 72, 73, 8, 37]

Ultimate majority/voting owner country remains unverified and never moves merit. Brand-channel leads do not certify an imported/reseller unit’s official local RMA; observed stock and filters leave scores and original capacity ranks unchanged. All photos are real, source-linked and capacity-labelled where a reference differs from the offer. [75, 77, 46, 47, 48, 49, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62]

What we did not rank, and why

What we did not rank, and why

Other candidates remain open assessments, not stock-based merit rejections. Missing exact price evidence is different from a dated sold-out price, and a faster interface name alone does not establish performance on this host. [119, 44]

CandidateReason for further work
X9 Pro 1 TBNo usable fresh exact RM price; older import cache and blocked pages are not a current price [79]
Samsung P7 / P9 USB4Announcement, exact first sale, complete local quote and matched Mac evidence unresolved [43]
Express 1M2 80GEvaluate at actual 40 Gb/s; exact complete quote and paired long-write test unresolved [6, 44]
EX400U SurvivorDistinct rugged model; original EX400U findings do not prove it [44]
Satechi / Acasis / UGREEN USB4Exact bridge, firmware, cable, NVMe pair and supported quote unresolved [44]
OWC Envoy / LaCie ThunderboltExact-capacity local costs and like-host sustained evidence unresolved [44]
SanDisk E81 / newer E83Separate generations; old advisory and E82 tests do not transfer [33, 44, 52]
Bare SN850X 4 TB / 990 Pro 2 TBNo current exact complete build quote; do not relabel a priced capacity [19, 44]
T9 4 TBFamily-range price lacks selected-capacity mapping [23]
Plain T7 / T7 Touch / X10 Pro / QLC alternativesDistinct model, NAND and host paths need exact costs and long-cache evidence [118, 119, 40, 44]
HDD / NAS / USB sticksDifferent categories, outside this external-SSD and local one-volume APFS comparison [5, 118, 7]

The old E81 firmware claim remains history and is not used to condemn E82. Absence of a new model’s tests does not prove inferiority. Historical partial external bounds used a selected 600-day cycle and cannot become current scores; the corrected old T9 range 41.05–66.05 remains history only. [33, 37, 43, 44, 45]

What would change this

What would change this

A supported complete Malaysian quote, exact-capacity post-cache/4K tests on Apple silicon, repeated power/mount results or a well-evidenced newer alternative can change the recommendation. Monitor retained physical growth rather than assuming a busy-day write count fills the drive at the same rate. There is no scheduled follow-up or claim that any entry has passed the actual-machine acceptance checks. [8, 12, 37, 43, 44, 79]

Independent challenge and author decision

Independent challenge and author decision

Three read-only second-opinion reviews returned unsafe as-is; none returned PASS. The author accepted corrections to component age, portable family-based sustained grades, price/grade sensitivity, current buying-offer visibility and test/cache attribution before the final scoring. [144]

The final reviewer still disputes the positive component grades for untested complete external builds and the order of close totals. The author treats labelled same-capacity NVMe/enclosure evidence as qualified component merit, retains the declared cost-efficiency formula and unrounded order, and publishes the ratings as provisional Mac-use estimates. These disagreements remain open to better exact-pair evidence; the ranking is not a physical-test certificate. [144, 119, 143]

Final author decision: PASS for the qualified provisional editorial ranking. This is separate from the independent verdicts; the sealed briefs, unedited reports and full adjudication are preserved in the topic evidence. [144]

How this was scored

A dependable external data drive with useful real performance, an appropriate capacity and a defensible complete purchase cost. The guide serves adults buying in Malaysia, comparing portable prebuilt drives with an NVMe drive in an enclosure. There is no universal winner when host capability, workload and support differ.

  • Connection and data-path reliability — 20% · Documented connection/power design, firmware recovery and known faults, supported host use and observed transfers. Sleep/wake and reboot certification remain a separate acceptance condition. Anecdotes are signals, not failure rates; unknown does not mean failure.
  • Sustained transfer and thermals — 17% · Measured speed after cache exhaustion and long-run throttling; identify test capacity, filesystem, host, interface and duration. Do not transplant a PC result or another capacity as a Mac measurement.
  • Mixed and small-file work — 10% · Low-queue-depth random reads/writes and realistic mixed-file tests, with cache/write-policy conditions. Sequential headline speed alone does not establish workspace responsiveness.
  • Platform and filesystem fit — 12% · Actual speed and functional compatibility across the stated Mac or PC use, APFS/encryption and bridge-specific TRIM/SMART support. Link ceilings are not measured throughput.
  • Endurance and documented support — 10% · Host-write warranty limits, warranty period and exclusions, firmware support and component responsibilities. Warranty access and store stock are disclosed separately and never scored.
  • Complete purchase value — 13% · Dated exact-capacity RM purchase cost, RM per decimal TB, including enclosure, required cable and delivery when known; compare like-for-like warranty routes. No placeholder price or market-wide inference from one seller.
  • Portability and serviceability — 8% · Documented size, protection, cable arrangement, passive cooling and replaceable components. Weight the relevant design tradeoff for travel or desktop use without counting speed twice.
  • Release recency — 10% · Earliest documented global order/sale date; show date and age separately. Use the project formula only after a defensible category cadence and exact variant dates are established.

    Mac link ceiling

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
Apple specifies rear Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports up to 40 Gb/s and front USB ports up to 10 Gb/s on Mac mini M6. The supplied host uses the rear 40 Gb/s path. Its USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 drives fall back to 10 Gb/s; 80 Gb/s devices gain no extra link bandwidth on this host.
A link ceiling is not a measured file-transfer rate.

  7. 7

    APFS and one-volume requirement

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
Disk Utility supports APFS and encrypted APFS on external disks. The demanding workspace requires one APFS volume because its cp -c clone workflow does not cross volumes; splitting models, logs or caches that need shared clones would defeat this requirement.

    Based on [5]

  8. 8

    Unattended mount and encryption

    JudgementRecorded 2026-10-10
Apple describes password entry when an encrypted external device is connected. Unattended unlock after reboot cannot be assumed. Editorial bring-up requirements: connect directly using the included/rated cable; verify mount and unlock after reboot and repeated sleep/wake; gate analysis startup on the intended volume identity; verify cloning and a restore from an independent backup. A working volume is not its own backup.
This is an operational recommendation, not a certification that a shortlisted device passes these checks or a change to the user's machine.

  9. 9

    Capacity units and reserve

    CalculationRecorded 2026-10-10
Manufacturer decimal TB uses 10^12 bytes; GiB uses 2^30 bytes. Thus 2 TB = 1862.645149 GiB and 4 TB = 3725.290298 GiB. The planning model reserves 20% of total capacity, an editorial headroom assumption, not an APFS or warranty requirement. Horizon = (0.8 × capacity_GiB − starting_GiB) / daily_net_growth_GiB.
Reproduced with decimal arithmetic. Nominal units and an explicit reserve are used; formatting overhead, snapshots, metadata and physical allocation can change usable space.

Capacity horizons with logs and reserve

    CalculationRecorded 2026-10-10
For an 88 GiB start with 20% reserve: 2 TB has 1402.116119 GiB growth headroom; 4 TB has 2892.232239 GiB. At 5/10/16 GiB per day of net growth, horizons are 280.423/140.212/87.632 days and 578.446/289.223/180.765 days respectively; nearest-day presentation is 280/140/88 and 578/289/181.
Assumes constant retained net growth, not gross write traffic. The measured peak write day does not establish that forecast.

    Capacity decision thresholds

    CalculationRecorded 2026-10-10
With 88 GiB start and 20% reserve, maximum average retained net growth for 1/3/5 years is 3.839/1.280/0.768 GiB/day on 2 TB, and 7.919/2.640/1.584 GiB/day on 4 TB. Years use 365.25 days. At sustained net growth of 16 GiB/day, neither capacity is a multi-year solution.
Rounded thresholds are planning figures, not exact safe limits; choose capacity against actual retention and growth.

    Host writes versus TBW

    CalculationRecorded 2026-10-10
A constant 16 GiB of host writes every day is 5844 GiB or 6.274947 decimal TB/year; over 5 years it is 31.374736 TB. This is 2.614561% of 1200 TBW and 1.307281% of 2400 TBW. It is a scenario, not the measured average, NAND write-amplification prediction or a warranty extension.
Warranty time and exclusions still apply even if the rated host-write amount is not reached.

    RetailerRecorded 2026-10-10
Aspiration lists no-heatsink WD_BLACK SN850X 2 TB WDS200T2X0E at RM879. Its listing/add-to-cart alone does not establish stock or official Malaysian warranty. The exact selected 4 TB no-heatsink price remained unresolved in the checked family listings.

    SN850X endurance and tested NAND

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
The 2 TB SN850X manufacturer specification states 1200 TBW and 5-year limited warranty. The independent internal 2 TB teardown found BiCS5 TLC and 2 GB DDR4 DRAM. These are the tested internal revision's components, not a guarantee about every later sample or the external build.

    Complete SN850X build reference subtotal

    CalculationRecorded 2026-10-10
Express 1M2 RM623.99 + no-heatsink SN850X 2 TB RM879 = RM1,502.99, or RM751.50/TB before unconfirmed delivery. The enclosure is sold out; SSD stock, complete bundle price and official local support routes are unconfirmed. No exact external benchmark for this pair was established.

    RetailerRecorded 2026-10-10
CGi Store lists beige T7 Shield 2 TB MU-PE2T0K/WW at RM1,169.10 after the displayed voucher, sold out. A separate black 4 TB MU-PE4T0S/WW listing is RM3,150 on preorder; arrival and official Malaysian warranty entitlement were not confirmed. Prices are from different sellers and support terms, not a same-store capacity upgrade.

T9 exact offer and unresolved 4 TB price

    RetailerRecorded 2026-10-10
CGi Store lists T9 2 TB MU-PG2T0B at RM1,349.10 after the displayed voucher, sold out. The checked multi-variant 4 TB family listing displays a lower family price without an exact selected-capacity binding; it is not a valid current 4 TB quote. Official Malaysian warranty entitlement for the 2 TB offer was not established.

    Samsung portable RM per TB

    CalculationRecorded 2026-10-10
    T7 Shield 2 TB RM1,169.10 / 2 = RM584.55/TB; 4 TB RM3,150 / 4 = RM787.50/TB. T9 2 TB RM1,349.10 / 2 = RM674.55/TB. A current T9 4 TB RM/TB figure cannot be calculated from the unresolved family quote.

Corsair EX400U identity and sale date

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
EX400U CSSD-EX400U4TB is a 4 TB USB4 portable drive, rated up to 4000/3600 MB/s, single-cable powered with a USB-C cable included and Mac/Thunderbolt 4 support advertised. Corsair announced immediate worldwide availability on 2025-01-23; age at check is 625 days, or 1 year 8 months. The manufacturer specifies 3-year limited warranty; the checked specification does not disclose NAND type, DRAM or TBW.

Corsair post-cache test and capacity limit

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
Tom's tested the 2 TB EX400U on Windows USB4. Its later same-method comparison with E82 reports about 1.8 GB/s initial writes, then roughly 1.55–1.65 GB/s after about 20 seconds, held for 30 minutes. The earlier review likewise found strong long-run writes and a hot metal top. No controlled 4 TB M6/macOS 27 APFS result or low-QD numerical dataset was established here.
These are laboratory results for the reviewers' samples, not our measurements. The guide does not promise the 4 TB Mac result will equal the 2 TB Windows result.

    Near-target Mac build observation

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
TechRadar's author used an M4 Mac mini, a no-heatsink Samsung 990 Pro 4 TB and Express 1M2, formatted APFS; Blackmagic read/write results were around 3100 MB/s. This is a useful near-target pairing observation, not a post-cache, encrypted APFS or repeated sleep/wake test on M6/macOS 27.
  28. 28

    OWC prebuilt Mac sustained observation

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
Macworld tested an 8 TB OWC-configured Express 1M2: AJA write/read about 2736/2980 MB/s and Blackmagic over 3 GB/s, with no reported speed collapse during an hour and surface around 40 degrees C. That SSD and capacity differ from both DIY builds; an hour of transfer does not establish unattended mount reliability.

990 Pro 4 TB NAND, endurance and internal sustained test

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
Samsung's 4 TB 990 Pro specification is TLC V-NAND, 4 GB LPDDR4 DRAM, 2400 TBW and 5 years or the TBW limit, whichever first. Tom's internal PCIe test found post-cache TLC writes above roughly 1.6 GB/s. These figures establish the bare SSD's specification/test, not external throughput. The Malaysia release notice dated 2023-09-08 says availability there from early November 2023; it does not prove the first global sale date.

T7 Shield 4 TB sustained and 4K test

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
PC-Welt tested black 4 TB MU-PE4T0S/EU on Windows 11/Ryzen 3700X/X570 with an ASMedia ASM3242 USB card. The 450 GB file transfer was strong, with sustained large-file speeds sometimes above 1 GB/s. Its weaker CrystalDiskMark 4K random-write result is Q32T1, not a QD1 measurement or the supplied APFS workspace. Capacity and platform transfer remain unverified.

T7 Shield exact 4 TB release and warranty

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
Samsung announced black T7 Shield 4 TB available for purchase on 2023-01-31; at 2026-10-10 its age is 1348 days, or 3 years 8 months. It uses 10 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2 and has 3-year limited warranty. The older 2 TB variant's 2022 launch must not be substituted for the 4 TB variant.

The supplied Mac uses it at 10 Gb/s. Its manufacturer ceiling is not a Mac benchmark. The notice's four-hour usage footnote applies to the LED, not a whole-drive four-hour-only warranty.

    SanDisk E82 exact family specification

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
SanDisk Extreme PRO with USB4, E82, has distinct 2 TB SDSSDE82-2T00-G25 and 4 TB SDSSDE82-4T00-G25 options, Thunderbolt 4 compatibility, an included cable and 5-year limited warranty. The 2 TB headline is up to 3800/3700 MB/s. NAND type, DRAM and a TBW limit were not disclosed in the checked official specification; the first exact global sale date was not established.

SanDisk 2 TB Windows sustained and random IO

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
Tom's 2 TB E82 test on Windows USB4/Ryzen 7600X/X870E shows about 3.5 GB/s for nearly 3 minutes, 1.1 GB/s for the next 5 minutes, then 0.8 GB/s over the rest of a 15-minute Iometer run. CrystalDiskMark random reads were strong in that comparison but random writes were near its bottom. The plotted random-IO ranking is not a matched QD1 APFS measurement; 4 TB and Mac behaviour remain unmeasured here.
No result is silently applied to another capacity or host.
  35. 35

    SanDisk USB4 power requirement

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
SanDisk support specifies E82 needs at least 15 W (5 V, 3 A) at all times for USB4 performance and 7.5 W for USB 3. It warns that some ports reduce power during idle or sleep. The exact Mac port's uninterrupted delivered power under these conditions was not measured; bus-powered does not imply verified unattended safety.
This requirement is material to the always-on recommendation and remains visible on the short page.
  36. 36

TRIM and SMART depend on the path

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
Howard Oakley's own 2024 test found Express 1M2 with ASM2464PD on Apple silicon USB4 supports both TRIM and SMART. His Intel Mac USB 3 fallback still supported TRIM but not SMART, and System Information could disagree with other tools. Therefore a blanket USB-never-TRIM claim is wrong; exact host, bridge, firmware and negotiation matter. M6/macOS 27 support and HMB passthrough were not independently verified here.
The article is primary test evidence from its author, not merely a secondary summary. No trimforce recommendation follows from it.
  37. 37

    Always-on stability and controller reports

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
The checked manufacturer pages, Mac reviews and community reports do not provide a controlled repeated sleep/wake/reboot dataset for these exact M6/macOS 27 options. MacRumors includes ASM2464PD wake/eject reports; an OWC owner reports improvement. These are anecdotes with different revisions/cables/settings, not comparative failure rates for ASMedia versus Intel or proof that a whole chipset family fails.
No brand is certified for uninterrupted attachment, and absence of a test is not evidence that it fails.
  38. 38

    OWC build hardware and warranty

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
Express 1M2 40 Gb/s is a passive aluminium NVMe enclosure for 2230/2242/2280 SSDs, with a 0.3 m 40 Gb/s cable and screwdriver included. OWC gives the enclosure alone 2 years, its own preconfigured drives 3 years. DIY SSD warranty is separate; the manufacturer's advertised Mac speed is a rating, not our exact-build test.
  39. 39

    Samsung warranty limits

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
Samsung's current SSD warranty covers the stated model/time or TBW limit, subject to exclusions; damage caused by assembly/third-party products is excluded. This is not a blanket declaration that all enclosures void an SSD warranty. The checked Malaysian PDF is an older model schedule, so it cannot certify new 990 Pro limits or the exact retailer's RMA route. Data recovery is not a replacement warranty benefit.
Ask the seller to confirm exact SKU, serial eligibility, authorised supply and which party handles a claim before relying on official local coverage.

Crucial X9 Pro specification and sale date

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
Micron announced X9 Pro available worldwide on 2023-07-25 in 1/2/4 TB. It specifies TLC NAND and 10 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2, up to 1050 MB/s read/write. Age at check is 1173 days, or 3 years 2 months. The checked launch specification does not establish low-QD APFS performance, DRAM/HMB path behaviour or always-on reliability.

    Crucial X9 Pro exact offer

    RetailerRecorded 2026-10-10
The exact CT2000X9PROSSD9 2 TB overseas marketplace listing is RM1,612.90, sold out, or RM806.45/TB. Its photographed package states 5-year limited warranty; official Malaysian service entitlement and the terms for this imported unit were not established.

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
Micron announced its exit from the Crucial consumer business on 2025-12-03, with consumer shipments through February 2026, and said it would continue warranty service and support. Remaining X9 Pro stock can therefore be compared, but no longer implies an ongoing consumer product line or a proven local RMA channel.

    Samsung P7 and P9 watchlist

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
Samsung announced P7/P9 USB4 on 2026-08-26 and said rollout would start in September, with capacity/availability varying. P9 headline ratings reach 4000/3800 MB/s. Announcement age is 45 days; it is not an established first global order/sale date. Exact Malaysia offers, support routes and independent matched Mac long-write evidence were not resolved in this audit.
  44. 44

    Other enclosure and portable candidates

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
Express 1M2 80G supports 40 Gb/s hosts and OWC claims up to 3800 MB/s on Thunderbolt 4, so it is not dismissed solely for its 80 Gb/s headline. EX400U Survivor is a distinct locally listed model with a multi-capacity price range. Exact selected RM builds and comparable Mac long-run tests remain unresolved; Satechi/Acasis/UGREEN, OWC Envoy, LaCie and newer E83 variants also remain candidates for a follow-up rather than inferred equivalents.
These are assessment gaps, not exclusions based on stock or a finding that the candidates are inferior.

    Capacity and budget tiers

    JudgementRecorded 2026-10-10
Editorial tiers compare complete-function reference costs, not fixed budgets: lower-cost 2 TB 10 Gb/s T7 Shield reference RM1,169.10; middle 2 TB DIY RM1,502.99 or E82 RM1,599; higher-capacity 4 TB E82 RM2,519, T7 Shield RM3,150 or premium 990 Pro DIY RM3,630.66. The cheaper quotes may be sold out or incomplete, and stock never changes merit. Choose 4 TB for demonstrably retained growth or retention headroom, not merely because one day had 16 GiB host writes.
These are dated references across sellers with different unresolved support routes, not an actionable cheapest-in-stock list.

    EX400U firmware and recovery qualification

    OfficialRecorded 2026-10-10
Corsair's September 23, 2025 advisory identifies ULFM91.0 link-power-management exit failures causing frequent disconnects/non-detection on specified EX400U 1/2/4 TB SKUs and affected serial range AA2XB5090–AA2XB5260. Its Windows 10/11 reinitialization utility installs corrected firmware and erases the SSD. Check SKU, serial, current firmware and a backup before using that remedy. ULFM91.2 release notes dated January 8, 2026 provide a Windows-only update and address ThinkPad E14 Gen5 USB-C compatibility and CrystalDiskInfo health display. This is neither a population failure rate nor proof that every current unit is defective; the ranked intended configuration is correctly updated firmware. The latest notes do not certify unattended Mac mounting.

Those are not a 4K random test, a Mac result or a population failure rate. No exact 1 TB post-cache plateau was recovered. The separately retained 2 TB Windows test holds about 1.55–1.65 GB/s post-cache, while the retained exact 4 TB test has a 69 C case and test error. They are qualified family context for 1 TB, never measured 1 TB claims. Manufacturer CSSD-EX400U1TB specifies USB4, Mac compatibility, included cable and three-year limited warranty. Corsair describes native Phison PS2251-21, SMART/TRIM/garbage collection; the exact-capacity NAND, DRAM/HMB path and contractual TBW remain unresolved. APH's exact 1 TB sample on Windows/Intel TB4 uses ASM2464PD: cached ATTO peaks 2890/2740 MB/s read/write and uncached write 249.15 MB/s; none is a post-cache APFS result. Fan was audible and the slider could rattle. SSD-Tester exact 1 TB AS SSD 4K read/write is 44.53/74.04 MB/s; inconsistent CDM latency/IOPS are excluded. PCWorld's SE920 family Windows 450/900 GB transfers reach about 850 MB/s after cache, but the accessible prose does not prove the tested SE920 capacity: its 2 TB 990 Pro is the source drive. No exact 1 TB long-cache, Apple-silicon/APFS or unattended recovery dataset is asserted. NAND, DRAM/HMB and contractual TBW are undisclosed; speculative review TBW is not a warranty term.

SL600 1 TB specification with 2 TB test extrapolation

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
Lexar binds LSL600X001T-RNBNG to 1 TB, with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, five-year limited warranty, aluminium body, sleeve and loop. Macs fall back to 10 Gb/s. No exact 1 TB post-cache or low-queue dataset was found. Tom's exact 2 TB family Windows 15-minute run holds around 1800 MB/s for 90 seconds then the mid-1400s; its 4617-file/50 GB mixed set is strong, with random reads behind LaCie and random writes near X10 Pro. PCWorld's separate 2 TB extended 900 GB write falls to about 700 MB/s after cache. These support qualified family-based editorial merit, not measured 1 TB performance. Capacity-unbound MacBook Pro results of 783/885 MB/s on exFAT and 876/907 on Journaled are not confirmed Apple-silicon/APFS tests. Manufacturer NAND, DRAM/HMB and TBW are not established; inferred TLC and speculative 600 TBW are not contractual facts. The 1 TB recommendation must retain this extrapolation beside it.

Original XS2000 exact 1 TB cache and revision

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
Original Kingston SXS2000/1000G, UPC740617321340, is distinct from refreshed /1000GA. Manufacturer data describes five-year limited warranty and compact IP55 protection with sleeve. Tom's exact original 1 TB Windows sample uses DRAM-less SM2320 and Micron 96-layer TLC: around 103 GB at 1890 MB/s, then 214 MB/s average after cache during a 15-minute run, with no observed thermal throttling. Internal SMART 72 C and infrared shell 36 C are different measurements. SSD-Tester 4K Q1T1 read/write is 27.20/85.83 MB/s. Kingston stability firmware S9I00128 dated March 10, 2026 explicitly covers /1000G. Review BOM is not guaranteed for all later units; no portable TBW contract or M6/APFS uptime claim is asserted. Native PC 20 Gb/s falls to 10 Gb/s on this Mac.

T7 Shield exact 1 TB transfer evidence

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
Tom's T7 Shield exact 1 TB Windows 15-minute Iometer run supports consistent sustained writes near Samsung's 900 MB/s claim after roughly 20 seconds of cache. SSD-Tester exact 1 TB Q1T1 4K read/write is 23.07/67.57 MB/s; its 200 GB whole-write average is 879 MB/s with a transition around 20 GB, not a separately measured post-cache plateau. The tested family has three-bit NAND and DRAM-less architecture; portable contractual TBW is undisclosed. The 2 TB family review supports around 1000 MB/s sustained writes; retained exact 4 TB Windows 450 GB transfer and weak Q32T1 random writes remain distinct. All are 10 Gb/s, IP65 rugged portable drives with three-year manufacturer limited warranty, not matched M6 encrypted-APFS benchmarks.

T9 exact 1 TB and 2 TB performance

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
SSD-Tester's Windows Gen 2x2 T9 1 TB sample has 4K Q1T1 read/write 25.26/74.32 MB/s, a 300 GB whole-write average 952 MB/s and cache transition around 24 GB. The exact 2 TB sample has Q1T1 23.20/75.21 MB/s, 300 GB whole-write average 1057 MB/s and transition around 78 GB. Whole-run averages are not post-cache plateaus, and different test dates do not prove smaller capacity superiority. PCWorld's explicit 2 TB Windows sample writes 450 GB in 8 min 23 sec and describes nearly 900 MB/s after secondary cache. Samsung documents five-year limited warranty, Windows/macOS compatibility, AES-256 password encryption and Mac Magician firmware/health support. Its USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is 20 Gb/s on a native PC, 10 Gb/s on this Mac. No exact M6 APFS or unattended recovery test is asserted; no contractual portable TBW is supplied.

X9 Pro exact 2 TB performance and limits

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
KitGuru's exact X9 Pro 2 TB CT2000X9PROSSD9 sample has native SM2320 with Micron B47R 176-layer TLC: 100 GB file write/read 931/1030 MB/s. SSD-Tester's exact 2 TB Windows Q1T1 4K is 31.38/84.30 MB/s; a 300 GB write averages 965 MB/s without a cliff. It does not prove a >300 GB SLC cache. Program/game copies are 400.01/562.27 MB/s in that protocol, while Telepolis reports weak many-small-file copies in another workload. Telepolis identifies DRAM-less architecture. No universal random-IO excellence follows. The manufacturer flyer binds the SKU, Mac/Windows compatibility and IP55. Continued warranty support is retained in [42]; consumer exit/stock do not deduct points. Current exact firmware fix/version, portable TBW and M6 APFS uptime remain unresolved. The old AnandTech full-span test now redirects; indexed primary text, if mentioned, is labelled indexed rather than a fresh page snapshot.

1 TB NVMe components versus complete enclosure builds

    ResearchRecorded 2026-10-10
Samsung 990 Pro 1 TB MZ-V9P1T0BW officially has TLC, 1 GB LPDDR4 and five-year/600 TBW warranty, whichever first. SSD-Tester's native PCIe exact 1 TB Q1T1 4K read/write is 74.82/180.84 MB/s; 200 GB whole-write average 2436 MB/s with cache around 115 GB, not a pure post-cache measurement. WD_BLACK SN850X 1 TB WDS100T2X0E officially has TLC and five-year/600 TBW warranty; the original exact 1 TB review's heatsink sample has 1 GB DDR4 and 58 C in its native test, not an OWC pair temperature. Original 2 TB SN850X has 2 GB DRAM/1200 TBW and retained 4 TB 990 Pro has 4 GB/2400 TBW. Express 1M2 is the original 40 Gb/s ASM2464PD passive replaceable-NVMe enclosure, two-year bare-enclosure warranty and included cable. Its Apple-silicon diagnostic TRIM/SMART experiment and the retained exact 4 TB 990 Pro M4/APFS pairing support qualified component/family merit for 1 TB, not measured 1 TB external speed or sleep recovery. Native NVMe DRAM does not prove HMB through USB; HMB is not promised for these builds.

1 TB capacity and endurance worked example

    CalculationRecorded 2026-10-10
Decimal 1 TB is 931.322575 GiB. With 88 GiB initial data and 20% reserve, growth headroom is 657.058060 GiB. Horizons at retained net growth 5/10/16 GiB/day are 131.411612/65.705806/41.066129 days, nearest-day 131/66/41. The retained 2 TB horizons are 280/140/88 and 4 TB 578/289/181. Using 365.25 days/year, the 1 TB maximum average retained net growth for 1/3/5 years is 1.798926/0.599642/0.359785 GiB/day. With a 66 GiB start and reserve the 1 TB horizons are 135.811612/67.905806/42.441129 days; with 88 GiB and no reserve 168.664515/84.332257/52.707661. Peak gross host writes do not establish any net-growth forecast. Constant 16 GiB/day host writes for five years total 31.374736 decimal TB, 5.229123% of a 600 TBW contract; the same writes are 2.614561% of 1200 TBW and 1.307281% of 2400 TBW. Write amplification, calendar warranty, temperature, firmware and component failure are separate; low TBW use is not a lifespan guarantee.

New reference photographs and capacity disclosures

    ObservationRecorded 2026-10-10
Original retailer model-family photographs for SL600, SE920 and original XS2000 were downloaded and visually reviewed unedited on October 10, 2026. SHA256 values respectively 42323b826e2f34179c883a545d2d070590220c637cd649356364f918c21c214a, 035a674760e5e54c5f0a9f68ffd2462f8d410a47928a4bafbacd106018b8ad70 and fe36adfee5b3c88feb23bf979449b405da454c53d44ad5640a90bad76ba8c406. XS2000 retains the retailer's multiple-capacity overlay. Existing black T7 Shield 4 TB review photo represents black 1/2 TB family with the capacity difference labelled; T9 manufacturer 4 TB package photo is labelled as family reference for 1/2 TB. OWC photographs show only the enclosure, with the separate SSD explicitly not shown. E82/Corsair photos remain matched family references. A beige T7 Shield exact-variant source asset was also reviewed and retained for the capacity alternative; its hash is 2d98b3f4f221b7434461eb0bc7cdb65ab397b3c64e9967f99dbd72bfd0776b1f. Model scoring input and rejected partial totals

    JudgementRecorded 2026-10-10
Seventeen diagnostic scoring calls using Claude Sonnet 5.5 under the model-input EXTERNAL-SSD-3.0 rubric cost a reported total US$0.244685. Ten omitted one or more criteria; their service totals normalize over missing weights, so no diagnostic overall is adopted. Exact T9/X9 tests recovered afterward also correct the input's performance gaps. EXTERNAL-SSD-4.0 retains all weights and clarifies documentary design merit versus unknown exact-host acceptance. The author reassesses every entry and owns each complete criterion grade, not just the missing ones. Value and recency are reproducible formulas; the other grades are subjective evidence-backed assessments with stated extrapolation and confidence. No product catalog score or taxonomy is written. Initial inputs, model outputs, corrections and final complete arithmetic remain reproducible; source measurements are attributed to their authors rather than called Refer laboratory results.

Buying advice and scope of the ranking

    JudgementRecorded 2026-10-10
The 1 TB ranking leads, but a high reference-price score does not imply a sold-out drive can be bought now. Lexar's affordable 1 TB reference uses explicitly labelled 2 TB family performance; T7 Shield has exact 1 TB long-write evidence and a separate higher-priced listed offer. ADATA is a listed 1 TB USB4 alternative with fan and incomplete exact post-cache/Mac evidence. OWC/990 Pro offers a replaceable high-performance path at a much higher incomplete parts cost; the closest named Mac/APFS test is the retained 4 TB build, not the 1 TB build. Corsair requires firmware/batch checking; E82 requires continuous USB4 power and is 2/4 TB, not 1 TB. Retain every larger entry and old dated offer as history. Buy a complete supported configuration only after confirming the actual quote, local service and Mac acceptance. Availability is a filter and never changes scores or original capacity ranks.

    Ranked revision and retained capacities

    JudgementRecorded 2026-10-10
The user requests visible ranks and /100 scores, a stronger 1 TB focus, and retention of the existing larger-capacity work. The revised field has eight 1 TB, five 2 TB and four 4 TB complete configurations, 17 total. Every previous main entry is retained. Ranks are within capacity, with 1 TB first, using EXTERNAL-SSD-6.0. The preceding public version was a seven-entry unranked comparison; its observations and research remain history, not the current merit order. After the independent challenge, the 1 TB order is provisional; DIY recency uses oldest-component parts age, uniformly across all pairs. Later-component build-possible-by remains a separate fact. Listed buying choices lead the short page. After the second challenge, prebuilt drives with only another-capacity post-cache evidence use the same conservative sustained/design baseline of 50: SL600 1 TB, EX400U 1 TB and E82 4 TB. All weights and price/age formulas are retained; this changes grades and orders without fitting weights to a preferred winner.

    Complete editorial scoring method

    JudgementRecorded 2026-10-10
EXTERNAL-SSD-6.0 is active, agent-set under standing authorization. Weights: connection/data path 0.20; sustained transfer/thermals 0.17; mixed/small IO 0.10; Mac/platform fit 0.12; endurance/support 0.10; RM value 0.13; physical design 0.08; release recency 0.10. Sum 1.00. The v2/v3 weights are unchanged. Final author-owned ratings assess sourced design, documented support and labelled empirical tests. They are editorial merit estimates, not measured failure probabilities or uptime certification. Unknown exact M6 sleep/wake and encrypted APFS results remain acceptance conditions, not fabricated observations. A documented single-cable compatible path receives 60 for connection merit; the OWC Apple-silicon diagnostic path 65; E82's explicit continuous-power condition 55; EX400U's official firmware recovery/host-fault qualifications 45. None receives an excellent connection grade. Value is min(100,100 times the lowest exact reference RM/TB among ranked entries of the same capacity divided by the candidate's RM/TB); a sold-out dated price is valid price evidence. All eight criteria contribute at their original weights; no missing-criterion normalization or availability/ownership points. Family/component performance extrapolation remains explicit, and small point differences do not establish statistically measured superiority. How release recency is calculated

    CalculationRecorded 2026-10-10
EXTERNAL-SSD-6.0 recency is min(100,max(0,round(100*(1-age_days/(2*cycle_days))))), with 1120 cadence days and check date 2026-10-10. Single-brand cadence is a proxy, not an industry median. Exact documented dates and sale/order-by bounds are distinguished. DIY parts age uses the oldest documented component uniformly after the challenge; the later 2023-12-07 enclosure date remains build-possible-by, not scored age. A later sale-by bound can overstate recency if an earlier sale is later found. Assembly does not reset either component clock.

    Sensitivity and close score orders

    CalculationRecorded 2026-10-10
    Reproduced sensitivity of the complete editorial assessments: ["V6 keeps the v5 oldest-component clock uniformly for DIY. Only SL600 1 TB, EX400U 1 TB and E82 4 TB sustained grades move to the same conservative baseline 50. Baseline 1 TB order: 1M2 + 990 Pro 62.7 > SL600 62.5 > T9 60.9 > T7 Shield 60.4 > 1M2 + SN850X 59.8 > SE920 56.3 > EX400U 53.7 > XS2000 48.1. Build-possible-by remains separately 2023-12-07.", "The v6 baseline is provisional: grades are calibrated editorial judgments, not exact-1-TB lab results or demonstrated statistical superiority. SL600 family evidence and its sold-out reference-price advantage need particular caution.", "The separate RM773 T7 Shield 1 TB buying offer changes 60.4 to 57.5/100 (about 2.95 points), moving from rank 4 to 5; its RM545 dated reference is not currently purchasable.", "Restoring the optimistic v5 SL600 sustained grade to 65: SL600 65.0 > 1M2 + 990 Pro 62.7 > T9 60.9 > T7 Shield 60.4 > 1M2 + SN850X 59.8 > SE920 56.3 > EX400U 53.7 > XS2000 48.1. This is a sensitivity assumption, not a new measurement or actual SL600 offer.", "Reducing the family-based SL600 sustained grade to 40: 1M2 + 990 Pro 62.7 > T9 60.9 > SL600 60.8 > T7 Shield 60.4 > 1M2 + SN850X 59.8 > SE920 56.3 > EX400U 53.7 > XS2000 48.1. This is a sensitivity assumption, not a new measurement or actual SL600 offer.", "Hypothetically repricing SL600 at RM545, the next-lowest recorded 1 TB price, and recalculating every 1 TB value grade from the new RM545 group minimum: 1M2 + 990 Pro 63.6 > T7 Shield 63.4 > T9 63.0 > SL600 62.5 > 1M2 + SN850X 60.7 > SE920 58.4 > EX400U 54.9 > XS2000 49.9. The proxy cadence and sold-out reference prices are modelling choices, not hidden confidence. The black T7 Shield 2 TB RM959 reference replaces the model-input beige RM1029 basis; the beige listing and older RM1169.10 voucher remain alternatives/history. All same-capacity value scores were recomputed, with no stock points. Small differences can change order under these assumptions and should not decide a purchase alone.

    Independent challenge and author adjudication

    JudgementRecorded 2026-10-10
Three read-only Claude Code second-opinion reviews challenged EXTERNAL-SSD versions 4, 5 and 6; all returned unsafe as-is, not PASS. The author accepted corrections to DIY component age, portable family-based sustained grades, price and grade sensitivity, actual buying-offer visibility, test/cache attribution, capacity order and short-page qualifications. The final reviewer still disputes positive component-based grades for untested complete external builds, the modest OWC connection grade and ordinal separation of close totals. The author permits explicitly labelled same-capacity NVMe/enclosure component merit without claiming measured external throughput, retains the predeclared cost-efficiency scale and exact-rational ordering, and labels the Mac-use ratings provisional. Final author decision: PASS for the qualified provisional editorial ranking; this is separate from and does not relabel the independent verdicts. The sealed briefs, original replies and full author adjudication are retained as evidence. No physical-host or exact-pair post-cache acceptance is claimed.
